Carlos Falchi for Target

This is definitely not helping our Target obsession. We just got word via WWD that "Target has bagged Falchi". Carlos Falchi designs swoon-worthy faux snakeskin bags in just about every shade imaginable. His 13-item collection for Target consists of "handbags in jewel tones such as plum and teal with contrasting shades of brown, black and gray." Carlos Falchi is set to make his Targét debut Oct. 11 to Dec. 27; which actually overlaps with Anna Sui's collection (see Spotted:Anna Sui for Target). We are going to be so broke this fall!

Tyler's Take

Rapper/Actor Mos Def models in NEIGHBORHOOD’s 2009 1st Ex. Series “Holidays in the Sun” collection. Notice the mix-match Chucks? So did Tyler…

“If you like these, I have another pair at home just like em!”

Who says shoes have to match? I mean they always have, and we accept that, but my right foot tends to be a bit more creative than my left (which is more of a mathematical appendage). So why treat them equally? Way to go Mos Def for breaking the rules! The man is clearly an economist. I mean think about it: you own 10 pairs of shoes, you have ten looks. But you start swapping them out and suddenly the possibilities are endless! I am not saying I’d wear a dress shoe with a sandal but black and red kicks respectively? I say well played sir, well played.

60 Minutes with Anna Wintour

Last night, Morely Safer from 60 Minutes sat down with the most powerful woman in fashion, Anna Wintour, affectionately known as “A-Dubs” to fans. We loved the interview and Anna gave us so many juicy quotes!

So is Anna anything like the icy, fictitious Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada? Yes. Do we still love her? Heck yea. You have to respect a woman who is arguably the best in her field and has been on top for decades. She’s 59 years old and still in her prime. When Morely brought up how she’s known as being cold, Anna smiled coyly and said, “We’re here to work…[I’m] simply striving for the best.” She admits that she takes after her father, who was Editor of the London England Standard, and was known as “Chilly Charly.” Morely later interviewed Anna’s right hand man, Editor-at-Large, Andre Leon Talley, who added “Anna can be intimidating - that’s her armor.”

Creative director Grace Coddington stated that “she enjoys not being completely approachable.” She also claimed that she has never seen Anna look less than perfect. That’s actually not too hard to believe, seeing that Vogue publishing parent CondeNast pays for her hair and makeup everyday of the week, as well dish out a $200,000+ clothing allowance! Yea, we’re jealous. Then again it only makes sense seeing as how she is the personification of Vogue.

To say she has power in the fashion world is an understatement. Nicolas Ghesquiere at Balenciaga says he always “keeps her in mind when designing. Any designer who says contrary is lying.” John Galliano, the mastermind at Dior, refers to Anna as his fairy godmother - as he should. “Without her support, I certainly would not be at the house of Dior today.” That’s because Bernard Arnold, chairman of LVMH (the fashion conglomerate that owns everything/everybody) went to Anna to discuss whether or not her should hire John. Yea, Anna has that kind of pull. And this is all from a woman who dropped out of high school at 16!

Despite the rumors of her leaving, Anna’s not going anywhere. But when the time comes, she says she will go very quietly. Viva la Anna!

Fashion at the Grove

The fashion show at The Grove last Thursday was both fun and a great way for Barneys to gain even more publicity. We literally wanted every look that came down their square-shaped runway. The show drew in a good mix of fashionistas as well as fashion forward media. The Los Angeles Times was spotted, Nick Verreos from Project Runway, and even Vogue sent reps out. We hope there are more shows to come at The Grove.

Scene Spotlight

Check out our latest segment in which we shine our spotlight on talented individuals that you need to know!

What: Lorick
Creator: Abigail Lorick
When: Launched Spring 07’
Where: New York
Signature Style: chic & elegant

To be a true lady, one must not only behave as one, but must dress like one as well. So what does such a lady wear to accompany her jeweled-gloves, kitten heels and scarf? A beautifully designed dress from Lorick, naturally.
Model turned designer, Abigail Lorick, is the creative genius behind the Lorick brand. We at B|E Scene are completely obsessed with Abigail’s charming line and at the thought of being a “Lorick Lady”. Lorick embodies timeless-chic, yet is still ideal for the modern woman. We imagine this is exactly the line Audrey Hepburn would wear if she were still gracing our presence today. If the designs seem very Blair Waldorf to you, that is because the fictitious Eleanor Waldorf line on Gossip Girl is actually Lorick.
We would be remiss if we didn’t mention Lorick’s captivating website. The site in itself tells a story. The background photos, which resemble stills from an Alfred Hitchcock classic, coupled with mesmerizing music by Dave Thomas gives the website a filmic effect.

No one does classy better than Lorick, and that’s exactly why they deserve to be in the Scene Spotlight.

Tyler's Take

Japanese sneaker retailer GETTRY turns to Cheeseburgers for inspiration in their collaboration with Asics.

Cheeseburger Shoes!! How can you say that out loud without laughing? “Hey man, check out my new burger kicks!” Ha! Ok the idea is awesome…I love burgers, I love shoes. So why do I not love these ‘cheesy’ shoes? Because they are incredibly ugly. But 100 points for creativity. What’s next, Subway sandwich Sandals? Pepperoni Pizza Pumps? Keep the fast food footwear coming!

Latest Trend for Guys: Hello Kitty?

Apparently the adorable kitty we all know and love has grown claws and is now deemed edgy enough for the male fashion world. Clothing line Undercover has worked on several projects over the years with Hello Kitty, creating both clothes and toys. Their latest project is the Undercover x Hello Kitty 35th Anniversary T-Shirts, which are sold in the Men’s Non-No Web store. Japanese footwear brand UBIQ also feature the classy cat in their signature eL sneakers, which you can get through atmos. And if that’s not proof enough that this kitty has street cred, Kanye posted pictures of Ambush’s trademark “POW” pendant with Hello Kitty on top, which is available exclusively through Marui Web Channel.

How do you feel about this trend?

Model as Muse Highlights

No Valley Girls?

Omg. According to The NY Post, the Gossip Girl spinoff, Valley Girls, may be dead before it even aired! A sigh of relief just swept the B|E office. In a previous rant, (see Omg. Lily in the 80’s) we brought out that even though the Lily-Rufus epic made for a juicy Gossip Girl backdrop, there is no need to have a series worth of Lily-Rufus flashbacks. Next week’s Gossip Girl will feature a Lily-Rufus 80’s flashback, and frankly that is all we need.

Check out the commercial for the now debunked Valley Girls

The Fashion Show Recap

If you follow fashion savvy people on Twitter like we do, then most likely your screens yesterday were buzzing with “are you watching The Fashion Show Tonight?” Last night Bravo premiered their latest fashion hit, which actually turned out to be more of a miss.

For starters, the people looked just plain weird! “Merlin the Magician” was by far the kookiest of the um, eclectic bunch with his cape and ridiculous ensembles. Then there’s James, whose look is reminiscent of Christian Siriano and bases his designs on “post colonialist theories”. Huh? Semi normal looking contestant Kristen even said, “I'm in the weirdest summer camp ever”.

Sure, the “crazies” of the world often prove to be creative geniuses. But that doesn’t seem to be the case with this group. After their mediocre runway shows, hosts Isaac Mizrahi, Kelly Roland and judge Fern Mallis were, thankfully, brutally honest. Everyone’s garments looked like Sewing 101 projects. We did like contestants Johnny and Merlin’s little black dresses they had to create during a mini challenge. We also liked the brief glimpse that we saw of Daniella’s menswear inspired portfolio.

The show itself looked low budget, but hey - it is the first season. We didn’t entirely hate it by any means. We did love the triangle shaped runway and the fact that their fashion shows are filled with people and not just a panel of judges. We also loved Isaac, who just might be the only reason to continue tuning in. It was obvious that Kelly was saying rehearsed lines, but she’s just so adorable that you have to love her.

Bottom line: this was no Project Runway. While Project Runway has introduced the world to so much talent, The Fashion Show felt like they gathered all of the C students and put them to work.

Will you continue to tune in?

Drake: One to Watch

Remember lovable Jimmy Brooks, played by Aubrey Graham, from the super dramatic Canadian teen drama Degrassi? (Don’t act like you don’t know what we’re talking about). Well the young actor is shedding his innocent, basketball-star-turned-paraplegic image and is successfully segwaying into a rapping career. Sure he’s worked with Lil’ Wayne and has even written for Dr. Dre. We’re more impressed with the fact that he seems to be on the right track with his style. He goes by his middle name, Drake, and so far, dresses in a polished yet edgy manner. Musically and style-wise, he’s one to watch.

Spotted: Anna Sui for Target

This almost sounds too good to be true: Anna Sui for Target. We think it’s officially time to start pronouncing Target as Targét (Tar-Jey), simply because they have consistently provided us with chic, designer goods for less. But it gets better…so much better! The line is inspired by (are you ready for this??) the leading ladies of Gossip Girl: S, B, Lil’ J and Vanessa. To say that we are excited is an understatement. The much anticipated line will launch in 250 select Target stores on September 13, 2009 and will run until October 17th.

XOXO,

B|E Scene

Rethinking the Merchandising Formula

Should retailers start selling clothes appropriate to the current season? In other words, should we be able to buy a coat during the cold winter months and *gasp* a bathing suit in the summer? In an effort to appeal to shoppers in this shaky economy, it’s been suggested that retailers start rethinking the whole merchandising formula. Instead of having to stock our wardrobes full of clothes we can’t wear for a few months, what if we were actually able to shop for flirty summer dresses in the summer, and scarves and gloves in the fall/winter, etc. You know, that doesn’t seem like such a bad idea to us.

McQueen Goes Green

What’s green, edgy and will promote environmental awareness? Alexander McQueen’s limited edition scarves made exclusively for the Home Project. Haven’t heard about it? Home is an environmental movie/project that launches June 5th and aims to bring awareness about the damage that’s being done to planet Earth. According to Vogue via the Shopping Blog, McQueen will only make 200 scarves and they will be designed to show a “manipulated photographic version of the dying earth morphing into a skull." Sounds dark - then again, it is McQueen. If you’re interested you can pick one up at any Alexander McQueen store and the proceeds will benefit Good Planet.

Our neighbors up north get somewhat of a shout out in this BustedTees original…

CANADA, America’s Hat. I don’t typically care for clever T-Shirts because most of them are well, not funny. I recently saw this schlub wearing this shirt, which in my opinion, is quite witty indeed. Yes, Canada is America’s hat. They sit comfortably above us and are often backwards on some major issues. They decorate America with maple syrup, ice hockey and the ever popular Mounties. Yes, Canada is America’s Hat, and if you are a proud American, wear this shirt with pride to accessorize our country! If you are a Canadian, sit on my head.

Mini Blog Facelift

Yea… we’ve had work done. Formally known as the Barnett Ellman Fashion Blog, we will now be known as B|E Scene. Don’t worry - the only thing that has changed is the name. Stay tuned for even more segments and interactive features!
